Your real career
When I think about “career,” what I really think about is “life”—and that’s what I’d like to talk about today. Is your career part of your job?And is
your job part of your life? Of course I know that it’s part of
what you do, but is it part of who you are? I ask because it’s
what I learned in putting this issue together and what’s resonated for me personally. If you are able to integrate your career,
your job and your life as a whole, then you have found an ideal
scenario. I also understand that it is our responsibility to make
that happen for ourselves—and that it can actually be fun.
To illustrate the point I’ll focus on one word that’s often associated with children: curiosity. If you are curious, you explore,
enthusiastically and with a sense of fun. You become adaptable
to situations because you want to learn more. You investigate
and innovate because it’s a way of demonstrating the results of
your curiosity. And it’s not just about big, massive efforts.
Sometimes the smallest ideas can lead to the biggest changes.
You connect the results of your explorations back to the goals
of the organization and the needs of your audience, because
that’s how you know you are making a difference.
Now this is where the life part comes in. If you treat your job
like this amazing opportunity to learn and innovate, then you
have the chance not only to create incredible value for your organization, but also to leap forward in your career with a sense of
pride and ownership that contributes to the quality of your life.
